Prompts for Better Marketing Copy: A Practical Guide

Most weak AI marketing copy comes from weak briefs. If you would not hand a freelancer a one-line request, do not hand it to an AI. A good brief names the audience, the offer, the voice and the proof, and asks for options you can edit.

The brief that works

  • Audience: who they are and what they already believe.
  • Problem and offer: the pain you solve and exactly what you sell.
  • Proof: real results, testimonials or facts you can use.
  • Voice: three adjectives and an example paragraph you like.
  • Format: channel, length and call to action.

Ask for options, not one answer

Request five headline angles built on different benefits, then choose and refine one. Ask for a version for skeptics and one for beginners to test different messages.

Teach it your brand voice

Paste two or three pieces of your best writing and ask the model to describe the style, then use that description in future prompts. Add a list of words and claims to avoid.

Keep it honest

Supply only claims you can back up and check legal requirements for advertising. Never let AI invent testimonials, statistics or reviews.

Test and learn

Run small A/B tests on subject lines or ad variants and keep a log of what wins. Feed winning patterns back into your prompt library.

Key takeaway: Treat the AI like a copywriter who needs a clear brief. Provide audience, proof and voice, request options and test the results.
