How to Write Better AI Prompts: A Simple Framework

Most weak AI answers come from vague requests. A little structure in your prompt gets far better results without any technical skill.

The five parts of a good prompt

Include a role, a task, context, constraints and a format. You do not need all five every time, but the more you add the less guessing the model does.

  • Role: who the AI should act as.
  • Task: the one thing you want done.
  • Context: audience, goal and background.
  • Constraints: length, tone, things to avoid.
  • Format: bullets, table, email, steps.

Show an example

Pasting a sample of the style you want is often more effective than describing it. One good example beats three sentences of explanation.

Iterate instead of restarting

Treat the first answer as a draft. Ask for a shorter version, a different angle, or to fix one specific problem.

Save prompts that work

Keep a personal library of prompts for recurring tasks and update them as you learn what works.

  1. Name each prompt by task.
  2. Note which tool it works best in.
  3. Review monthly.
Key takeaway: State the role, task, context, constraints and format, then iterate. Structure beats cleverness.
